Bookkeeping for owner-led service businesses

Somewhere in here is the answer to "how did we actually do last month?"

The information is already there. We put it in order.

Books you can actually make a decision from.

Sorted, reconciled and closed on the same date every month — so when you ask, the answer's already there.

Every month’s close reviewed by a controller before it reaches you

The numbers are there. The clarity isn't.

Receipts are scattered. Accounts aren’t fully reconciled. You are not quite sure which invoices are still open or whether last month has actually been closed out.

So when you need an answer, you either piece it together yourself or make the call without it.

You should not have to become your own bookkeeper to run a good business.

You’re never quite sure when the month is actually closed.

You’ve put off a hire because you weren’t sure you could afford it.

A simple question sends you into three logins and a spreadsheet.

Tax time starts with cleanup instead of a clean handoff.

Holly Alman, smiling, in a raspberry sweater

Hi — I’m Holly.

I spent seventeen years teaching, and over time I found myself wanting to make more room for my girls and for our life together. Teaching taught me a lot about how I work best: building systems, creating clear processes, and finding ways to make them repeatable. I know what it feels like to be good at something and still feel behind when there is never enough time to do it all.

Those seventeen years gave me a lot of practice building processes, documenting them, and making them repeatable. It turns out that is a big part of good bookkeeping, too. I’m an Intuit Certified Bookkeeper, and I’m working toward the IAPB designation. Every month’s close is reviewed by a controller before it reaches you.

Intuit Certified Bookkeeper

Reviewed every month — a controller checks each close before delivery

Backed by Equip CFO — the fractional CFO firm run by my husband, Chris. It’s how Happy Ledger ensures your books are held to the high standards your business needs to make decisions.

Three steps to books you can trust.

01

Show us what you've got

Thirty minutes. You show us what you have, however messy. There is no judgment here, just an honest look at where things stand. We will tell you what needs to happen next and whether we are the right fit.

02

We get the books in order

We set up the books around how your business actually works. If there’s catch-up or cleanup to do first, you’ll know exactly what that involves before we start.

03

Run the business with numbers you trust

Each month, you get clean, reviewed books and a clear picture of what happened. When a decision comes up, you have numbers you can trust.

What we need from you: Read-access to your accounts, an hour in the first week, and about fifteen minutes a month after that.

Your monthly close

What you can count on every month.

The books get organized, reconciled and reviewed. You get the financial statements your business needs — plus a short, plain-English note on what stood out.

Not another pile of reports to sort through. Just clean books, the statements you need, and a clear read on what happened.

A note from Holly

A few things that stood out this month

July 2026 · Sample findings

01Revenue finished 6% higher than June. The increase came primarily from client work billed during the final two weeks of the month.

02Cash fell even though the month was profitable. Two larger customer invoices are still outstanding and account for most of the difference.

03Software expense was unusually high. Two annual subscriptions renewed in July. Nothing appears duplicated, but expect the category to return to normal next month.

04One thing needs your attention. There are two invoices more than 30 days old. We’ve flagged them so you know exactly which ones to follow up on.

What stands behind the work

A controller reviews every close.

Not a spot check at year end — every month, before anything reaches you.

Equip CFO stands behind it.

A working fractional CFO practice, which means the standard your books are held to is the standard a CFO would want them at.

A date, not a range.

Your close lands on the same day every month. You’ll know it before you sign, and you can hold us to it.

The questions you’d ask on the call.

Probably. We are not trying to be the lowest-cost bookkeeping option. The difference is that we are building books you can actually use to run your business. They are closed on time, built around the decisions you need to make, and reviewed before they reach you. When you have a question, you should be able to find the answer in your books without waiting three weeks. If that difference is not worth it to you, we may not be the right fit. And that is okay.

Every month’s close is reviewed by a controller before it reaches you. That is not an upgrade or an add-on. It is how every account is run at every tier.

Then the question is not whether your books are accurate. It is whether you can use them to answer questions about your business. Open last month’s P&L and try to work out which service line actually made you money. If you cannot, the books are doing half their job.

There’s nothing to be ashamed about. Most people who call are behind. We quote the catch-up separately and once, up front, so you know the whole number before you agree to anything. Nobody here is going to be shocked by your books.

You keep ownership of everything. We work inside your accounts, not in a system you cannot access. If you leave, your books stay yours and go with you.

Some CPA firms offer bookkeeping, but many times your CPA is only helping you file your return. That’s a different job from keeping the books throughout the year. We make sure your books are clean and ready for your CPA. That makes it easier for them and less expensive for you because they aren’t charging you to clean them up.

Businesses under about $300,000 in revenue are usually better served by software and an hour a month than by us. We are also not the right fit for businesses selling physical products with inventory to track, businesses that need tax preparation or filing, or anyone shopping for the cheapest option. Honestly, we will not be it.

Not ready to talk? Start here.

Are your books decision-ready?

  • Ten questions your books should be able to answer in under five minutes.
  • What it means if your books cannot answer those questions, and what is usually structurally wrong underneath.
  • The order of what to fix, whether or not you ever talk to us.

Your results arrive by email. We’ll follow up once. If you’d rather we didn’t, say so and we won’t.

Let’s find out if your books can answer the question.

Thirty minutes, whenever it works for you.

You show us what you’ve got. Nothing needs tidying first.

You get a straight answer on fit, scope and price — and no follow-up you didn’t ask for.

You’re not committing to anything by booking.
